Institutional review boards (IRBs) across Kentucky strive daily to promote and facilitate research within the current regulatory framework and the evolving ethical environment. The CCTS Regulatory Support and Research Ethics leadership has taken the lead on a special initiative to unite IRB professionals across Kentucky to develop a unified vision and cooperative framework for community research engagement in clinical and translational science.
Since 2008, the CCTS and the UK Office of Research Integrity (ORI) have hosted annual or semiannual meetings to provide education opportunities and facilitate dialogue and collaborations among diverse Kentucky IRBs. Often held in conjunction with the CCTS Spring or Fall Conference, these meetings have been instrumental in cementing relationships and expanding the network to include representatives from 29 Kentucky institutions.
Representatives from 14 IRBs gathered on the University of Kentucky campus, August 20th, 2010 for a full day meeting and workshop. Forty individuals including IRB members, staff, and leadership attended the meeting, some traveling from as far as Western Kentucky. The group identified short term and long term efforts aimed at establishing joint review by capitalizing on existing collaborations and shared expertise.
