Content
Abstracts may be submitted on any aspect of clinical health-related research, including: basic research with animal models of clinical disease and/or with human tissue; clinical research that involves human subjects; health-related clinical, epidemiological and/or community-based research; outcomes research; health services research; and behavioral science investigations. Preclinical research designed to inform clinical translational research is also permitted.
Abstracts may describe work that has been or will be submitted at other meetings.

Topics may include but are not limited to:
- Original Research: All prospective and retrospective studies that involve testing a hypothesis by collecting and analyzing data. Abstracts must specify the following: hypothesis, number of subjects, procedures, results, statistical analyses, and important findings (conclusions). Ongoing original research is acceptable/encouraged from individuals receiving career research training.
- Theoretical/Commentary: Abstracts addressing issues related to clinical health including (but not limited to) policy, trends in the field, treatment strategies, mechanisms of action and methodological issues. No data is required and no concluding statement is necessary.
- Literature Review: Abstracts should provide a scholarly discussion of a specific topic via review of the current literature. The abstract does not need to present data, but a concluding statement about the findings is required.
- Research Description (Trainees Only): Individuals who are developing their research plan but have not yet initiated the studies are welcome/encouraged to provide a description of their current plans, including hypotheses, number of subjects, proposed methods and procedures, statistical analyses, expected results, research skills to be acquired, and a description of how the research plan will support career development.
- Career Training Plan (Trainees Only): Individuals who are receiving career research training who have not yet formulated a research plan are welcome/encouraged to provide a description of their career training plan. Abstracts must specify the following: career aspirations, career training objectives, ongoing training activities, research interests, objective indices of training progress, timeline for completion of training objectives, and a description of how the training plan will support career aspirations.

Who may submit
Graduate and medical students, residents, interns, postdoctoral fellows and scholars, research staff and junior faculty members of the University of Kentucky. No individual should be first author on more than one abstract. Submissions from individuals participating in research career training programs (e.g., NIH training programs, including T32, BIRWCH, GCRC, COBRE, Physical Scientist, Clinical Research Scholar and CReFF) are particularly encouraged.

Oral Presentations / Poster Presentations
A very limited number of abstracts presenting original research will be invited to give oral presentations of approximately 12 minutes in duration, with 5 additional minutes for questions. The majority of abstracts will be accepted as poster presentations. All participants will receive written feedback from an interdisciplinary group of conference mentors. Feedback will focus on both research and career development issues.

There is no cost for abstract submission.

Formatting & Submitting your Abstract
You will submit your abstract on-line, using the following instructions:
- Limit your abstract to approximately 250 words;
- Keep a copy for your records;
- Do not include diagrams, illustrations or other graphic objects in your work.
- To insert special characters into your abstract using Windows, Microsoft Office 2007: please note, if your abstract contains special characters (e.g., β, ±, superscripts, etc.) you must use the Windows Character Map to insert the special character(s) into your abstract. This applies whether you type your entries in Word and cut & paste into the on-line submission fields, or enter your information directly into the on-line submission fields. Other methods of inserting special characters into your abstract may prevent your work from downloading properly for reviewing and printing.

To use the Windows Character Map:
Click on Start; go to All Programs; click Accessories, then select
System Tools and finally click on Character Map. Then change
the font to "Fixedsys" to select your characters.

Based on your on-line submission, your abstract will be evaluated, compiled and printed for distribution to conference attendees.

Deadline for submission
Abstracts are due by February 12, 2010. You will be notified by February 19, 2010, of your presentation format (i.e., oral or poster).
