How To Use AHA Data
Most commonly, AHA data is merged with other datasets that contain hospital identifiers (e.g. hospital discharge data, claims, Medicare Compare Data, Medicare Cost Reports). In these cases, the AHA data supplies hospital characteristics (e.g. hospital ownership, bed size, type of teaching hospital) that are usually used as control or explanatory variables.

AHA data can also be used to construct geographic-level information (e.g. number of beds in a county, measures of hospital competition) that can be merged with other geo-coded information (e.g. Area Health Resources File, Prevention Quality Indicators) to conduct geographic-level or multi-level analyses.
